We build quantum computers for Germany and Europe
As a quantum mechanical universal tool, quantum computers offer enormous opportunities for research, industry and business. Nevertheless, they require further research and development before they can be used commercially. In order to facilitate effective technology transfer, scientific research must work closely with industry and business, while also encouraging the involvement of start-ups and potential end users.
In order to accelerate this development, the DLR Quantum Computing Initiative is bringing together partners from industry and business, start-ups and research for the joint development of quantum computers and their underlying technologies. The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) has provided funding for this purpose. Approximately 80 percent of the money will go directly into industry. DLR will use 20 percent of the funds for its own research and development work.
DLR Innovation Centers in Ulm and Hamburg
The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) has established two Innovation Centres in Ulm and Hamburg for the joint development of quantum computers. These provide our industrial partners with clean rooms, offices, workshops and laboratories. DLR research projects, industry, the start-up scene and future users of quantum computing come together in the Innovation Centres. DLR is constantly exchanging ideas with other consortia at both national and European level.
Ultimately, DLR will make the quantum computers created as part of its Quantum Computing Initiative available to other DLR institutes and interested partners via the DLR Quantum Computing Platform. By forging this close alliance between scientific research, industry and business, DLR is supporting Germany’s path to becoming a leading international location for quantum computing.
A broad technological base
The DLR Quantum Computing Initiative is pursuing various technological approaches to realising quantum computers in order to acquire and consolidate the widest possible spectrum of expertise. For that reason, DLR commissions companies that offer an overall concept, along with individual companies and start-ups for aspects such as the development of the necessary supply chains, hardware, software and applications.
One objective of the DLR Quantum Computing Initiative is the development of a quantum computing ecosystem in which economically relevant products, services and applications for quantum computers are created. Close cooperation with DLR research institutes and other institutions is crucial: research and industry will join forces to create an ecosystem for quantum computing through technology transfer and collaboration.
Become part of the quantum computing ecosystem
The DLR Quantum Computing Initiative and the quantum computing ecosystem are growing rapidly, and we are in need of enthusiastic, skilled people and promising ideas. Through our active tenders, established companies and start-ups can become part of the DLR Quantum Computing Initiative. We are currently looking for companies for the development of quantum applications. We are also keen to partner with research institutes with a strong focus on aspects of quantum computing; we offer the Quantum Fellowship Programme for doctoral candidates. Alternatively, you can start working for us or apply to one of our many exciting open positions in the field of quantum technologies at the DLR. We look forward to shaping the future of quantum computing in Germany and the rest of Europe together with you.
