FÖNIQS – Technologies for solid-state nanoscale quantum systems
Project duration: 01.01.2027 – 31.12.2027
We are developing a solution to the scalability problem faced by quantum computers based on NV centres in diamond. In doing so, we are laying the groundwork for technology transfer to applications in quantum computing, as well as colour centres in diamond and quantum sensing.
With FÖNIQS, we are focusing on a key development challenge: quantum computers based on NV centres in diamond cannot be scaled successfully. Conventional methods are not precise enough to produce dipole-dipole-coupled NV centres. Using intellectual property from the predecessor project StarQ, proprietary processes and innovative infrastructure, we aim to demonstrate successful coupling and scaling. The aim is to develop technologies and methods for the fabrication of scaled quantum computers >8 qubits based on NV centres in diamond. In doing so, we will promote technology transfer, the development of concrete use cases, and solve key problems in materials science and quantum computer fabrication.
Motivation
Quantum computers based on NV centres in diamond are solid-state systems that do not require complex vacuum or cryogenic technology; in other words, they operate at room temperature. To date, such quantum computers have been unable to perform large-scale computational operations due to their low number of qubits. We aim to successfully scale NV centres in diamond and thereby increase the number of qubits. Our specific aim: to develop technologies for the fabrication of clusters of dipole-dipole-coupled NV centres with long coherence times, thereby enabling compact quantum computers with >8 qubits at room temperature.
Challenge
The deterministic fabrication of surface-bound, dipole-dipole-coupled NV centres in diamond with high yield is a technological challenge for which no practical solution has yet been demonstrated. The relevant fabrication processes can only be described in terms of probabilities, which are not precise enough for the coupling of multiple NV centres.
With FÖNIQS, we are utilising two key findings from the predecessor project, StarQ. Firstly, we are employing a process – for which a patent application has been filed – for the production of NV centres in diamond, whilst continuing to develop it further. Secondly, we are expanding a device, for which StarQ has filed a patent application, for the ozone treatment of diamond. Overall, we are utilising processes developed in-house that offer a high probability of successful coupling, and we are using unique, novel fabrication and characterisation equipment to demonstrate successful scaling.
Impact
With FÖNIQS, we are bringing two key project outcomes from the predecessor project, StarQ, closer to being ready for commercialisation. This is a crucial step towards industrial transfer and deployment in specific applications within quantum computing, as well as in colour centres in diamonds and quantum sensing. All stakeholders in the quantum computing ecosystem will benefit from our results, as we are solving key problems for manufacturers of materials and quantum computers.
