It is an important milestone for the Xaphiro project from QUDORA and NXP: for the first time, their chip-based ion trap has captured individual ions. XAPHIRO has thus successfully completed the design and set-up phase and can now start characterising, calibrating and fine-tuning the system – the preparations for the first quantum computing operation on the new chip.
QUDORA explains the significance of the milestone as follows: “In order to capture ions, everything has to harmonise for the first time: the vacuum system, the lasers, optics, electronics and the microfabricated 50-qubit quantum processor. The sign of success: a dot of light on the screen showing the fluorescent light of a single ion held in the quantum processor by electric fields.
